William B. Umstead State Park sits between Raleigh and Durham and offers miles of shaded trails, bridle paths and lakes. It is one of the easiest day trips in the Triangle, and a little planning keeps the day relaxed.
Before you leave
Check the park website for trail closures after heavy rain, then decide between the Reedy Creek and Crabtree Creek entrances. Parking fills up early on spring and fall weekends, so plan to arrive before mid-morning.
In the car
Keep a small roadside kit in the trunk and check your tire pressure before you go. Gravel lots and cooler mornings both affect tires, and a cordless inflator makes the fix quick.
Bringing the dog
Dogs are welcome on a leash. Pack water, a towel and a paw cleaner so red clay stays out of the car.
